Join us on a trip down memory lane as we explore the history of this iconic brand.

The Origins of Ocean Pacific

Ocean Pacific was founded in 1972 in California by Jeff Hakman, Mike Hynson, and Dick Hazelton. The brand was born out of a love of surfing and a desire to create quality apparel that reflected the surfing lifestyle. In the early days, Ocean Pacific was known for its bright colors and bold prints. The brand’s signature logo, a stylized sunburst, became synonymous with the carefree California lifestyle.

In the 1980s, Ocean Pacific capitalized on the rising popularity of surfing culture and became one of the most popular surf brands in the world. The brand’s clothing was worn by some of the most iconic surfers of the time, including three-time world champion Tom Curren. Ocean Pacific also began sponsoring major surfing competitions, further cementing its place in popular culture.

In addition to its successful foray into the world of surfing, Ocean Pacific also became popular among those who simply loved California lifestyle brands. The brand’s clothing symbolized a laid-back attitude and a love of leisure activities like hanging out at the beach or going for a hike. For many people, wearing Ocean Pacific clothes was a way to embrace their own personal chillout vibes.

The Decline of Ocean Pacific

Unfortunately, by the early 2000s,Ocean Pacific had lost its place at the top of the surfing world. The brand struggled to keep up with the ever-changing trends in fashion and was eventually overshadowed by newer brands like Quiksilver and Billabong. In 2005, after years of financial difficulties, Ocean Pacific filed for bankruptcy protection.

Though Ocean Pacific is no longer the powerhouse it once was, the brand remains an important part of surfing history. And for those of us who grew up wearing its clothes, it will always have a place in our hearts.

  2. I love the throwback stuff, and there’s other surfing brands out, and ones that have faded, but Ocean Pacific is a stand out.
