Jon Brion had never touched hip-hop. Kanye played him Diamonds From Sierra Leone in a hotel room and told him to make the strings sound like Shirley Bassey on Goldfinger. He said yes.

Late Registration dropped Aug 30, 2005. Chamber-orchestra hip-hop as a template. 860k first week. Gold Digger held No.1 for ten straight weeks — first rap single to do that since Gangsta`s Paradise, a decade earlier.
