MTV blackballed rap for seven years before Yo! MTV Raps kicked the door open in 1988 — then hip-hop owned the whole hallway.
Fab 5 Freddy hosted the weekend show. Ed Lover and Doctor Dré ran weekdays from 1989 until the show ended in 1995.
In those seven years they broke Public Enemy, N.W.A., Wu-Tang Clan and Naughty by Nature to a national audience that would have never seen them otherwise. The culture forced the door open — MTV became the amplifier.

25 years ago today Aaliyah`s plane went down. She was 22. And rap production has been rewiring around her voice ever since ✨
She wasn`t a rapper. But she was the third permanent corner of the Timbaland/Missy triangle — the voice that made empty pockets and throat clicks feel like architecture, not absence.
No One in a Million (1996), no Supa Dupa Fly. No VA sound. No Justin Timberlake solo. The whole late-90s pocket that changed rap production forever? Built on her.
That streetwear moodboard brands charge $200 to reprint in 2026 — oversized varsity, baggy Tommy, one-eye swoop? She wore it first. 1994. At fifteen.

Jay-Z just handed J. Cole his original Roc-A-Fella chain — and that pendant is 30 years of receipts. 💎
Rewind to `95: Dame Dash, Jay, and Biggs start the label after Priority passed on Reasonable Doubt. What follows becomes hip-hop scripture — Reasonable Doubt (`96), Vol. 2 Hard Knock Life (`98), The Blueprint (`01). Every one platinum. Cam, Kanye, Beans, Freeway — all launched off that diamond.
Now Jay drops the OG chain around Cole`s neck at his birthday show. Not a gift. A co-sign, dropped mid-anniversary run.
Passing the crown, on record.

22 years ago today, 40 Water dropped his first greatest hits — halfway through the career most rappers dream of finishing.
August 24, 2004. Vallejo. Sick Wid It × Jive dropped The Best of E-40: Yesterday, Today & Tomorrow. Nine solo albums already behind him.
The Bay`s connective tissue — B-Legit, D-Shot, Mac Dre, The Click all moving in his orbit. His slang had already colonized rap English. `Fasho.` `Captain save a hoe.` That Vallejo diction.
The comp was scaffolding. Two years later `Tell Me When to Go` hit and hyphy broke through nationwide.
In 2026? 30+ studio albums, active tour dates, the Goon With The Spoon sausage brand, Earl Stevens Selections wine. Still cooking. Still shipping.

Lauryn Hill signed the same "sole-credit" clause Prince fought for. It cost her $5M — and made hip-hop history.
Aug 25, 1998: Miseducation drops on Ruffhouse/Columbia. She`s 23. Sole writer + producer credit — the "Prince model" — because no woman had ever been marketed as a total-control auteur on a hip-hop debut.
#1 Billboard 200, 422K first-week. Grammy night `99: 5 wins including AOTY. First hip-hop album to ever take Album of the Year.
Three years later the New Ark Family sued over the credits. Settlement: $5M.
Recorded mostly at Tuff Gong in Kingston — where Marley cut Exodus. That`s the roots weight.

Fifteen years ago today, Compton took the wheel and Dre narrated the ride. Game`s R.E.D. Album dropped. 🔴🖤
Twenty-one tracks. Dre on the intro tape. Pharrell, DJ Premier, Cool & Dre on the boards. 98K first week. Third No. 1 debut in a row — no consensus, no coasting, all West.
Also today in hip-hop:
🎂 Lil Yachty turns 29
🏀 Kobe would`ve been 48
Plus four more anniversaries worth the receipts

Chuck D turns 66 today. `Nation of Millions` turns 38. Both still louder than the average bear.
Roosevelt to the Rock Hall — Rolling Stone put Nation of Millions at #48 of the 500 Greatest Albums, and Chuck never softened the message once.
Also today in hip-hop:
🎤 Coolio would`ve been 63 — Gangsta`s Paradise still owns the room
🎤 Big L`s The Big Picture turns 26 — what Harlem lost still echoes
🎤 DMX`s Year of the Dog… Again hits 20 — even in a `down` year, X still ate
Heavy anniversary reel. Full story via the link in bio.

Everyone names Kool Herc. Almost nobody names his sister — but hip-hop wouldn`t exist without Cindy Campbell.
August 11, 1973. Back-to-school fundraiser at 1520 Sedgwick Ave, West Bronx. 25 cents ladies, 50 fellas.
Herc DJ`d. Cut between two copies of the same record — the `merry-go-round` — stretching the drum break until the room lost it. Coke La Rock grabbed the mic. Hip-hop`s first MC, at hip-hop`s first party.
The building is still standing. National landmark since 2007.
