June 20, 2017 — two days after collapsing on the Art of Rap tour, Albert Johnson died in Las Vegas. Sickle cell told him he wouldn`t see double digits. He made it to The Infamous. To Hell On Earth. To one of the coldest, most-quoted verses East Coast hardcore ever produced.
He was 20 when he wrote that line. Kids who weren`t born when Shook Ones dropped still quote it on first listen.

June 1948 — Columbia unveils the 33⅓ LP at the Waldorf. 21+ min per side replaces the 78`s 5. Capacity that nobody at Columbia predicted.
Bronx DJs use those long-groove discs to loop the break. Herc at 1520 Sedgwick. Flash. Bambaataa. The breakbeat needs the LP to exist.
Pete Rock flips the LP. Premier flips the LP. RZA flips the LP. Every Wu tape, every Madvillain press, every Illmatic spin — pressed on a format invented for symphony halls.
The Waldorf wasn`t trying to invent hip-hop. The Bronx did.

Public Enemy laid the foundation in 1990 with Fear of a Black Planet. KRS-One turned it into a chapter heading on Edutainment. dead prez built a whole catalog out of it.
Then 2020 happened. Beyoncé surprise-dropped Black Parade on June 19. Kanye made it a paid holiday at Yeezy/DONDA — a year ahead of the federal government. Killer Mike`s Atlanta speech became the playbook.

Two and a half years late. That is how long it took for freedom news to reach Galveston after the Emancipation Proclamation 🔥
On June 19, 1865, Union General Gordon Granger read General Order No. 3 in Galveston, Texas — formally announcing the end of slavery in the state. Lincoln had signed the Proclamation on January 1, 1863. The delay? Thirty months of stolen liberation.
That gap between proclamation and reality became the spine of conscious hip-hop:
→ KRS-One / BDP — Stop the Violence Movement (1989)
→ Public Enemy — Fight the Power (1989)
→ Killer Mike — Reagan (2012)
→ Kendrick Lamar — Alright (2015)
Forty years of receipts. The federal Juneteenth holiday was only signed into law in June 2021 — 156 years after Galveston.
