Chuck D turns 66 today. `Nation of Millions` turns 38. Both still louder than the average bear.
Roosevelt to the Rock Hall — Rolling Stone put Nation of Millions at #48 of the 500 Greatest Albums, and Chuck never softened the message once.
Also today in hip-hop:
🎤 Coolio would`ve been 63 — Gangsta`s Paradise still owns the room
🎤 Big L`s The Big Picture turns 26 — what Harlem lost still echoes
🎤 DMX`s Year of the Dog… Again hits 20 — even in a `down` year, X still ate

Everyone names Kool Herc. Almost nobody names his sister — but hip-hop wouldn`t exist without Cindy Campbell.
August 11, 1973. Back-to-school fundraiser at 1520 Sedgwick Ave, West Bronx. 25 cents ladies, 50 fellas.
Herc DJ`d. Cut between two copies of the same record — the `merry-go-round` — stretching the drum break until the room lost it. Coke La Rock grabbed the mic. Hip-hop`s first MC, at hip-hop`s first party.
The building is still standing. National landmark since 2007.

Common`s first #1 album — and most heads still don`t frame it right.
July 31, 2007. Finding Forever drops, 155k first-week, Billboard #1. Common`s seventh album — the one that finally topped.
Ten of twelve tracks: Kanye West. Chicago soul-loop MPC blueprint, direct sequel to Be. "The People" flipped Herbie Hancock`s "Rockit."
Dilla jewel: "So Far to Go" — one of the last Dilla beats to land major-label. Aaliyah tribute, Dwele hook, 18 months after Dilla passed.
Grammy night: sensei beat by student — Graduation took Best Rap Album.
Last full Kanye–Common LP for a decade.

Two producers. One record. They never once shared a studio.
Champion Sound (2003) is the sound of J Dilla and Madlib mailing tapes back and forth — Detroit to LA, LA to Detroit — beats one way, verses the other.
Peanut Butter Wolf played matchmaker at Stones Throw. Dilla and Madlib didn`t meet in person until later — backstage at a Mos Def show in Montreal.
That mail-order record is the DNA of Madvillainy, Donuts, and everything Alchemist, Kaytranada and Griselda built after. The heads always knew.

30 years ago today: Tribe dropped Beats, Rhymes and Life — and quietly handed the whole culture to J Dilla.
July 30, 1996 — their first #1 on the Billboard 200. Platinum. And the moment a Detroit kid named James Yancey stepped from Slum Village demos into hip-hop`s future.
The Ummah production credit was collective in name, individual in practice. So when you hear the off-kilter meditative feel on `Get a Hold,` `1nce Again,` `Stressed Out,` `Word Play` — you`re hearing Jay Dee`s fingerprints before Donuts, before Fantastic Vol. 2, before anyone called him a legend.
He built `Get a Hold` in under 15 minutes. That`s the receipt.

Thirty years ago De La Soul told hip-hop to grow up — and the culture called them sellouts for it. Here`s what they actually said.
Stakes Is High dropped July 2, 1996. First De La record without Prince Paul at the boards — Dave and Trugoy self-produced most of it. The title track wasn`t a diss. It was a mirror. Elders naming the sickness before anyone else was ready to admit it.
The 30th-anniversary 4xLP colored-vinyl reissue is limited to 600 copies. Full lyric book included. Grail-tier for anyone who still hears the record talking to them.

DJ Premier chopped a Vic Juris jazz record from 1980 and accidentally made Gang Starr`s biggest chart hit. Here`s the paradox →
`Mass Appeal` (1994) critiques sellouts and became one. Guru knew it. That`s the point.
Preem flipped `Horizon Drive` — a mellow jazz-guitar cut sitting in Muse Records` vault for 14 years — into four bars that J Dilla and Madlib built entire catalogs on top of.
Times Square video decode. The sellout paradox. The blueprint boom-bap producers still study.

Same city. Same date. 12 years apart. July 22 gave Chicago two albums that mapped the drill era from both sides →
🎧 Lil Durk 2X (2016) — Young Chop, Zaytoven, Sonny Digital, ChopSquad DJ on the boards. Half post-Keef Chicago drill, half ATL crossover Def Jam demanded. Peaked #29 Billboard 200. Durk left the label after this and outperformed it on OTF within 18 months.
🎙️ Common Nobody Smiling (2014) — No I.D. producing every track. Elder-statesman answer to the drill wave, titled around the same neighborhoods Durk was reporting from.
Two poles. One map.
