A Tribute to the Vintage Throwback Art of Eric B and Rakim
In the world of Hip Hop, there are countless opinions on who is the best rapper or rap group of all time. Eric B and Rakim Changed Hip Hop Forever
Eric B and Rakim redefined what it meant to be a rapper. Before them, rappers were mostly concerned with party rap or what is now known as trap music. Their debut album Paid in Full changed the game by focusing on lyrics and delivery instead of just beats and hooks. They introduced multi-syllabic rhyming schemes and complex verbiage that was previously unused in Hip Hop. Rappers today such as Kendrick Lamar, J Cole, and Chance The Rapper have all cited Eric B and Rakim as a major influence in their music.
The Mecca of Hip Hop
In 1987, Paid in Full was released on 4th & Broadway Records. The album was produced by Marley Marl and featured samples from Jazz musicians such as James Brown and Miles Davis. The album was a critical and commercial success, reaching platinum status in 1992. It is considered to be one of the greatest Hip Hop albums of all time and is credited with reviving East Coast Hip Hop after the dominance of West Coast Gangsta Rap in the early 1990s.
Follow The Leader
In 1988, Eric B and Rakim released their sophomore album Follow The Leader. The album was another critical and commercial success, peaking at number 1 on Billboard’s Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart. It featured more complex lyricism andDelivery than its predecessor and solidified Eric B and Rakim as one of the best rap groups of all time. To this day, Follow The Leader is considered to be a Hip Hop classic.
