Yo-Yo Dishes Out Hip-Hop History and Home Recipes on FOX 5 DC
This week on FOX 5 DC, Grammy-nominated rapper Yo-Yo blended her musical legacy with her flair for home cooking during a live segment with anchor Marissa Mitchell. She highlighted her new Aspire TV series, "Downright Delicious with Yo-Yo," and reflected on decades in the spotlight.
"Downright Delicious with Yo-Yo" premieres on Aspire TV each Tuesday. Throughout the half-hour series, she cooks family-inspired dishes while bringing the bold energy that made her a standout on the West Coast Hip-Hop scene.
“It’s a gift from God. I love to cook. I mean, it’s the only time I can bring my family from upstairs to downstairs. And it’s my passion. It’s something that I’ve been doing for a long time,” Yo Yo said. “I play music. I invite people over. I cook for you. I create a great cocktail for you. I beat you in dominoes and spades. And we have an amazing time. And this is just my way, another way of feeding the community.”
The show goes beyond cooking to highlight culture, family ties and connection. Each episode weaves in storytelling and community outreach, reflecting the values Yo-Yo has promoted across her career.
A Los Angeles native, she emerged in the late 1980s with vivid lyrics and an uncompromising voice. Collaborations with Ice Cube and her fearless approach helped secure her place in a male-dominated genre.
She also founded the Yo-Yo School of Hip-Hop, pairing music with life lessons to empower young people through creative expression. The program uses music as an educational tool that inspires students and builds confidence.
Her nonprofit Cafe Mocha Cares celebrated 15 years of supporting women, children and families transitioning from shelters to stable homes with the Salute Them Awards.
The cooking series opens a new chapter in her career, blending her culinary talent with the community focus she has maintained for decades.
