Richmond’s Zuri & Xenos Ignite Hip-Hop’s Evolution with Explosive Boom Bap and Experimental Freestyle

AllHipHop recently spent time in the studio with Zuri and Xenos, two rising talents deeply reshaping the Virginia rap scene. They arrived at WonWorld Studios to explore their creative style, artistic inspirations, and plans for the future.

Both raised in Richmond, Virginia, they come from the same streets yet carve separate creative routes. Though they share a home base, each artist brings a unique perspective to the mic.

During a session hosted by DJ Boy Wonda, the duo delivered an AllHipHop freestyle that blended Zuri’s boom bap lyricism with Xenos’s experimental soundscapes. The session produced a high-energy track that previewed the duo’s evolving chemistry.

When asked about their hometown, Zuri replied, "VA all day—two up, two down. Richmond to be exact." Xenos added, "Same here—Richmond as well, but I was actually born in Florida."

Zuri described his approach as deeply rooted in traditional Hip-Hop. "J. Cole is probably my number one inspiration. Nas is right there with him. Those two are neck and neck. I’m heavily influenced by old school Hip-Hop and R&B. A lot of artists from the golden era really shaped my perspective." He labeled his own style as lyrical and melodic with a boom bap flavor, but he stressed a desire to remain versatile.

Xenos pointed to his love for unconventional sound design and an experimental mindset. "My biggest influence overall is Michael Jackson, just the way he composed his music. I love eccentric sounds and that experimental approach, and that’s something I try to bring into my own art." He highlighted modern visionaries like Andre 3000, Teezo Touchdown and Tyler, The Creator, praising their willingness to reshape genres as they remain authentic.

Following their discussion, the duo stepped into the booth for a live session. Zuri traded tightly woven bars over steady drums as Xenos layered in unpredictable beats and textures. The final take captured their chemistry as artists who can honor tradition and venture into uncharted territory.

Virginia natives with growing national attention, Zuri and Xenos are crafting a sound that reflects their roots and charts a path forward. They plan to release a collaborative EP later this year and continue building a reputation beyond their home state.
