LeBron James Backs Nipsey Hussle Docuseries Packed with Rare Footage and Unreleased Music
Built from family recordings that span more than two decades, a new documentary series on Nipsey Hussle is set to reach viewers in 2026. Director One9 has nearly finished post-production on this multi-part project, which charts the late rapper’s course from a South Los Angeles youth to a Grammy-winning artist and entrepreneur. Narration comes from Hussle’s brother, Blacc Sam, and posthumous voiceovers drawn from the artist’s own recordings.
One9 told Variety on December 5 that the series is nearly complete and is awaiting a distribution partner. It draws on footage shot by Hussle’s family, following him from his first studio session at age 12 to his rise in the mainstream music scene.
“His father videotaped everything,” One9 said. The story unfolds across five to seven episodes and includes unreleased tracks alongside excerpts from an audiobook Hussle recorded before his death in March 2019.
Marathon Films, the company Hussle helped launch to oversee his creative output, is producing this series in collaboration with SpringHill Entertainment, backed by LeBron James and Maverick Carter. The aim is to capture every chapter of his life—from early ties to the Rollin 60s Neighborhood Crips and his independent approach to music to his community development work in South Los Angeles.
One9, whose credits include Nas: Time Is Illmatic and the recent Allen Iv3rson documentary for Prime Video, plans to keep the account fully candid. “We’re not sanitizing anything,” he said. The series explores victories and setbacks with the same clarity.
Interviews feature prominent figures such as Jay-Z and Kendrick Lamar, along with colleagues and childhood friends who knew Hussle in Crenshaw. One9 hopes audiences will see how Hussle moved from burning CDs on a home computer to plotting real estate ventures in the neighborhood he loved.
The docuseries is currently seeking a distribution partner, with a tentative release planned for sometime in 2026.
