Description
“The Grind Date” — De La Soul came back swinging on their seventh studio album, dropping a record that proved the Native Tongues never lost the touch.
2004. After AOI: Bionix and the Tommy Boy era closure, Pos, Trugoy, and Maseo regrouped on Sanctuary Urban with a project that felt like a quiet flex on a younger generation. No Prince Paul this time — they handled the chemistry themselves, with cuts from Madlib, J Dilla, 9th Wonder, Jake One, and Supa Dave West. The lineup alone is a Mt. Rushmore of mid-2000s underground production.
“The Grind Date” wasn’t chasing radio. “Shoomp” with Sean Paul of YGZ, “Verbal Clap,” “Much More,” “Days Of Our Lives” with Common — these were heads-only joints. Pos and Dove rapping like dudes who’d been doing this since Tougher Than Leather and had nothing left to prove. Wearing this is saying you know hip-hop’s seventh-album curse never applied to De La. They just kept making it.
