In 2005, Phonte, Rapper Big Pooh, and producer 9th Wonder dropped The Minstrel Show — a concept album disguised as a UBN television special. It was a surgical takedown of the stereotypes Black artists were being forced into by major labels, packaged as a minstrel show for mass consumption. Atlantic Records passed on it. The underground ran with it forever.

This album hit different because it was real. 9th Wonder’s soul-drenched beats hitting underneath Phonte’s literary bars and Big Pooh’s gritty straight talk — Durham, NC making the whole East Coast sound like home. “Lovin’ It,” “The Becoming,” “Back to the Basics” — tracks that got better with every listen and exposed deeper layers of craft most rappers were hiding behind.
