In 1999, Blackalicious — Gift of Gab on the mic, Chief Xcel behind the boards — dropped their debut full-length out of the Bay Area’s Quannum Projects camp (the same crew that gave you DJ Shadow, Lyrics Born, and Lateef the Truthspeaker). Gift of Gab’s multisyllabic, tongue-twisting internal rhyme schemes rewrote what technical rapping could sound like. Chief Xcel’s warm, jazz-dusted boom bap gave it a home. Nia — Swahili for “purpose,” the fifth principle of Kwanzaa — was the title and the mission statement.

This is the album that made “A-B-C-D, E-F-G, H-I, hehe, J-K” a rap rite of passage. This is underground hip-hop’s answer to virtuosity — no gimmicks, no shortcuts, just bars built like architecture.
