In 2014, Open Mike Eagle dropped his Mello Music Group breakout on an industry that didn’t know where to file him — too weird for backpack rap, too rap for alt-comedy. He named songs after Doug Stamper and Jon Lovitz, got Hannibal Buress on the hook and Kool A.D. on a feature, and let Kenny Segal, Busdriver, Jeremiah Jae, Illingsworth, and Dibiase build the beds underneath. The jokes were real jokes. The ache was real ache. That’s the whole album in one sentence.

This hoodie honors the record that made “art-rap” a career path instead of a punchline — the bridge from Project Blowed’s Busdriver-era abstraction to the 2010s indie-rap wave that gave guys like Billy Woods and Danny Brown room to be exactly as strange as they needed to be. Mike didn’t apologize for being the only one in the room who sounded like this. Neither should you.
