In 2018, D.C.’s ANKHLEJOHN linked with the faceless producer Big Ghost Ltd and turned a museum catalog into a grimy underground classic. Every song on Van Ghost is titled after a Van Gogh canvas: “The Night Café,” “The Yellow House,” “The Starry Night,” “The Red Vineyard,” down to “The Potato Eaters.” Hus Kingpin pulled up on “Almond Blossom.” Fly Anakin, Eto and Crimeapple turned “At Eternity’s Gate” into a four-man cypher.

This is the post-Griselda underground at its sharpest. Big Ghost built bleak, cinematic loops and ANKHLEJOHN ran through them with abrasive, unpredictable bars and street detail. It’s the rare art-concept album that never gets precious about the concept. The cover is on this tee as-is: the skeleton in Vincent’s blue suit, smoking on a stoop in Arles, with the Big Ghost Certified Limited stamp.
