Poke and Puff put Mtume’s “Juicy Fruit” under “Juicy.” The Isleys’ “Between the Sheets” slid into “Big Poppa.” Easy Mo Bee handled the grime: “Gimme the Loot,” “Warning,” and “The What” with Method Man. DJ Premier cut “Unbelievable” out of an R. Kelly line. Lord Finesse closed it out on “Suicidal Thoughts.”

The album opens with a birth and closes with a gunshot. In between, Big balanced radio records and street records without watering down either. It went to No. 15 on the Billboard 200, took New York back while the West Coast owned the charts, and in 2018 the RIAA certified it six-times platinum. One album in his lifetime. That was enough.
