Description
Before Reflection Eternal, before Rawkus made them stars, there was a Cincinnati crew called Mood — and an album called Doom.
September 23, 1997. Main Flow and Donte on the mic, DJ Jahson behind the boards, and a young Hi-Tek cooking up beats out of Cincinnati — a city nobody in the industry was watching for rap. TVT and Blunt Recordings put out Doom: 18 tracks of apocalyptic rhymes pulling from scripture, ancient history and politics, with Wu-affiliated Sunz of Man riding through and a then-unknown Brooklyn MC named Talib Kweli dropping a guest verse. “Karma” was the single, with “Cincinnati” as the B-side.
That’s the jewel: Doom is the record that launched Talib Kweli, Hi-Tek and Lone Catalysts. Peak backpack era, deep in the late-’90s independent underground — dusty, cerebral, dead serious about the craft. If you love Train of Thought, this is where the roots go. This hoodie wears Mood’s logo exploding out of a lightning-cracked cosmos, exactly as heavy as the album sounds.
