Hip-hop almost didn`t have a name. 🎤 In 1978, Bronx MC Keith "Cowboy" Wiggins clowned a friend who`d just been drafted, chanting "hip/hop/hip/hop" in a marching cadence to mock Army boots on pavement.
The crowd loved it. He worked it into his set. That throwaway joke became the name of an entire culture.
Cowboy repped Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five as hype man and dancer, pioneering the call-and-response MCing still running through every "wave your hands in the air" you`ve heard since.
He passed September 8, 1989 at 28. He never saw how big his joke became.

The payoff: JMT`s first Billboard 200 entry. The deep cut Uncommon Valor: A Vietnam Story took HipHopDX`s 2006 Verse of the Year.
