In 1993, Butterfly, Ladybug Mecca, and Doodlebug dropped Reachin’ (A New Refutation of Time and Space) — a jazz-sampling, bohemian left turn that hip-hop wasn’t ready for and has never stopped chasing since. “Rebirth of Slick (Cool Like Dat)” became the group’s signature and a Grammy winner, but the deep cuts are where the real jewels live: live bass lines, Blue Note samples, and lyrics that treated the mic like a poetry reading in a smoke-filled basement.

This hoodie honors the album that made abstract rap a genre of its own — the record that connects Tribe’s jazz-rap experiments to the Soulquarians and beyond. Wearing it is a nod to the heads who know Butterfly’s flow predates half the “conscious rap” playlists out there.
