Elzhi The Preface T-Shirt

Description

Before Elmatic, before the solo run, there was The Preface — Detroit’s best-kept secret finally reading you the first chapter.

August 12, 2008. Fat Beats drops eLZhi’s debut and the heads who’d been rewinding his Slum Village verses finally got a full-length. Black Milk on the boards for nearly the whole thing — chopped soul, knocking drums, that post-Dilla Detroit bounce. Then the pen: “Guessing Game” bending the flow every few bars, “Colors” built entirely out of hue wordplay, “Talking in My Sleep” turning a dream into a short story. RapReviews gave it a 9.5. Plenty of critics called it one of the best rap records of 2008.

This is lyricist’s-lyricist rap from the city that gave us J Dilla, Slum Village, Royce, Guilty Simpson, Phat Kat and a young Danny Brown — and every one of those last four shows up on this album. Golden-age craftsmanship, Detroit grit, no shortcuts. The art says it all: eyes over the top of the book. Read between the lines.
