Description
Straight Out of the Jungle. Before Tribe. Before De La. Before the Native Tongues had a name — the Jungle Brothers laid the blueprint.
In November 1988, Mike Gee, Afrika Baby Bam, and DJ Sammy B dropped their debut on Warlock Records and quietly rewrote what hip-hop could sound like. Jazz loops, Afrocentric consciousness, positive energy — a decade before “backpack rap” had a name. “Because I Got It Like That” was a manifesto. “I’ll House You” — the Todd Terry-produced crossover — pulled house music into hip-hop’s ear before anyone else was ready. “Jimbrowski” was pure playful bravado. And “Black Is Black” introduced the world to a young Q-Tip guesting on the mic, previewing the crew that would soon become A Tribe Called Quest.
This shirt honors the record that birthed the Native Tongues collective. Without Straight Out of the Jungle, there’s no Low End Theory, no 3 Feet High and Rising, no Black Sheep, no Monie Love. The whole conscious, jazz-sampling, Afrocentric wave of golden age hip-hop traces back to this LP. Wear the origin.
