Hip-Hop Pioneer Rakim Wins Peabody Medal and Johns Hopkins Honorary Degree
“Just a teenager when he launched his career, Rakim has amassed decades of success as a performing artist, entertainer and cultural icon,” Peabody Dean Fred Bronstein said. “As our graduating student artists begin to create their paths forward, they will no doubt find inspiration in the words and life story of this truly foundational figure in Hip-Hop.”
Reports show Rakim addressed both undergraduate and graduate ceremonies at the Peabody Institute. The school plans to offer a Bachelor of Music in Hip-Hop program starting in the fall of 2025.
Rakim came into view during the mid-1980s as half of the duo Eric B. & Rakim. Their 1986 debut single, “Eric B. Is President,” ushered in a major shift for rap. Paid In Full remains one of the most influential Hip-Hop albums ever released. Rakim, praised as one of the most complex MCs, brought a spiritual dimension to the genre. His solo recordings have reinforced his legacy.
