Today in Hip-Hop — October 11: MC Lyte Turns 56, Weeks Before Her Rock Hall Induction

October 11, 1970. Lana Michele Moorer is born in Queens and raised in East Flatbush, Brooklyn. Most of hip-hop knows her as MC Lyte, and she turns 56 today. Here’s the jewel: she wrote “I Cram to Understand U (Sam)” when she was 12 and recorded it at 16. It’s a love song about a boyfriend lost to crack, and it was one of the first rap records to take on the epidemic at all. A teenager saw it coming before most of the industry did.

That single opened Lyte as a Rock, released April 19, 1988 on First Priority/Atlantic. It’s widely credited as the first full-length solo album by a woman MC. First Priority was a family operation: Nat Robinson started the label, and his sons Milk Dee and DJ Giz were Audio Two, the duo behind “Top Billin’.” They produced most of the album. Prince Paul and King of Chill also worked on it. Then came “10% Dis,” still one of the coldest diss records of the eighties. Lyte aimed it at Antoinette, who was down with Hurby Luv Bug, after Antoinette’s “I Got an Attitude” came out on a beat that sounded a lot like “Top Billin’.” Lyte later said the title meant they only used 10% of what they wrote. The beef carried into Eyes on This in 1989.

Five years later, “Ruffneck” made her the first solo woman rapper to get an RIAA Gold certification, and it earned her a Grammy nomination for Best Rap Solo Performance. Every woman who has gone platinum since walks a path Lyte paved. The institutions are catching up: in 2026 the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame named her an Early Influence Award inductee, alongside Queen Latifah. That’s the same class Wu-Tang Clan goes in with as performers. The ceremony is November 14 at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles, about a month after her birthday. Not bad for a kid from Flatbush who was writing about crack at 12.

We made a Lyte As A Rock tee for heads who know the album had no blueprint to work from, because she was drawing it as she went. Wear it to the induction watch party.

It came out on Epitaph in the US and Lex in the UK, with Ghostface, Talib Kweli and Cee-Lo as guests, and peaked at No. 41 on the Billboard 200 and No. 2 Independent. (Our MF DOOM merch guide covers the rest of the villain’s catalog.)
  • Cardi B is born (Oct 11, 1992, turns 34): the Bronx MC who shares Lyte’s birthday. “Bodak Yellow” was the first solo No. 1 on the Hot 100 by a woman rapper since Lauryn Hill’s “Doo Wop (That Thing)” in 1998. In 2019 she became the first solo woman to win the Grammy for Best Rap Album. It’s the same lane Lyte opened up in 1988.
