Description
Fifth Ward’s darkest storyteller stepped out on his own, and Southern rap never sounded the same.
October 1991. The Geto Boys had just made “Mind Playing Tricks on Me” the scariest thing on rap radio, and Brad Jordan came right back with his solo debut on Rap-A-Lot, billed as Scarface of the Geto Boys. Crazy C and Face handled the boards themselves. “Mr. Scarface.” “A Minute to Pray and a Second to Die.” “I’m Dead.” It went #1 on Billboard’s Heatseekers chart, climbed to #13 on the R&B/Hip-Hop albums chart, and was certified Gold in April 1993 with almost no help from the coasts.
This is gangsta rap played like a horror film: paranoid, confessional, cold-blooded. Houston proved it could build giants without anybody’s permission, and every Southern MC who raps about the weight of the streets walks the road Face paved. The art goes all in on it: shotguns drawn, stacks on the table, a Rap-A-Lot crime scene frozen mid-scream under “Scarface of the Geto Boys” in distressed block letters.
