Today in Hip-Hop — September 26: Ludacris’s ‘Release Therapy’ Turns 20

September 26, 2006. Ludacris drops Release Therapy — his sixth album, cover art literally showing him stretched out on a psychiatrist’s couch, working through a bad year in real time. Twenty years later, the jewel most people forget: “Do Your Time” stacked Beanie Sigel, Pimp C, and C-Murder on one jail-rap cut, and Pimp C had only been out of prison since December 2005. That verse wasn’t a guest feature. It was a man reporting live from the other side.

Release Therapy debuted at No. 1, sold over 309,000 copies its first week, and went on to move 1.5 million copies — but the bigger flex was the Grammy. Best Rap Album at the 49th Annual Grammys, Ludacris’s only career win in that category, beating a field that included Jay-Z’s Kingdom Come. That’s not a fluke vote. That’s the Academy catching up to what Atlanta had already built — Ludacris turning Dirty South bravado into something that could carry a full album’s worth of subject matter without losing the concept.

“Runaway Love,” the Mary J. Blige-assisted single, is the real reason the album still holds up. A mainstream rap single built around three different narratives of child abuse and domestic violence wasn’t the safe radio play in 2006 — it won Best Rap/Sung Collaboration and proved Ludacris could do weight, not just wordplay. Pair that with “Money Maker,” the Neptunes-produced, Pharrell-featured club record that became his biggest Hot 100 hit to that point, and you get the whole thesis of Release Therapy: a comedian’s timing married to a therapist’s subject matter, on the same tracklist.

Also today in hip-hop:

  • Shyne — self-titled debut (2000): Bad Boy Records dropped his 16-track debut the same day he was already sitting in prison for the Club New York shooting — “Bad Boyz” and “Bonnie & Shyne” carried it to Gold with the artist unable to promote a single show.
  • Ras Kass turns 53 (b. 1973): The L.A. lyricist built a reputation as one of the sharpest technical rappers of his generation and later linked with Canibus, Kurupt, and Killah Priest to form The HRSMN — a supergroup built entirely on bar-for-bar credibility.
  • Fetty Wap’s motorcycle accident (2015): At the height of “Trap Queen” mania, Fetty was hit by a car while riding in his hometown of Paterson, NJ — injured his leg, walked away, kept it moving. A reminder the come-up never comes without a scar somewhere.
