Today in Hip-Hop — October 7: Ludacris’ Chicken-n-Beer Goes No. 1

October 7, 2003. Ludacris drops Chicken-n-Beer and it debuts at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 — his first album to top the chart, moving 429,000 copies in week one. That same Tuesday, RZA quietly puts out his second solo joint, Birth of a Prince, straight out of 36 Chambers. Three different hip-hop lanes, one release date — proof the catalog runs deep on any given Tuesday.

Chicken-n-Beer wasn’t just Luda being Luda — fast mouth, Southern bounce, a sense of humor nobody else was running on records this big. It had a teenage Kanye West on the boards months before his own College Dropout dropped, DJ Paul and Juicy J bringing Memphis grit, and a guest list stacked with Snoop, 8Ball & MJG. It went on to go double platinum and crack the UK and Canadian charts in ways no Luda project had before — the South wasn’t just competing with New York and the West Coast by 2003, it was setting the pace.

RZA’s Birth of a Prince is the deep-cut most casual Wu fans skip past, and that’s the mistake. Recorded at 36 Chambers with Bronze Nazareth, True Master, and Megahertz on the boards, it’s Bobby Digital’s sound without the Bobby Digital name — and it holds one of Ol’ Dirty Bastard’s last studio features. ODB, credited as Dirt McGirt, shows up on “We Pop” a little over a year before his death — a verse that plays different now than it did on release day.

And while Luda was breaking chart records, Columbus duo Soul Position — rapper Blueprint and producer RJD2 — dropped 8 Million Stories that same morning through Fat Beats/Rhymesayers. No Billboard No. 1 for that one, just a 68-minute record critics gave a perfect 10 and the underground still quotes two decades later. Same release date, same culture, completely different rooms.

RZA kept Wu-Tang’s sound alive on wax while the group’s name stayed lit up everywhere else that year — we made a Wu-Tang Forever Neon sign that does the same thing for a wall.

Also today in hip-hop:

  • Soul Position’s 8 Million Stories — same release date as Chicken-n-Beer, opposite commercial outcome, same critical respect.
  • Napoleon (Mutah Beale) of Tupac’s Outlawz was born Oct. 7, 1977 — joined the crew in ’95 and rode with Pac through the Makaveli era.
  • Kanye West’s production credit on Chicken-n-Beer landed four months before his own debut, The College Dropout, hit shelves.
  • Chicken-n-Beer‘s international run — No. 5 in Canada, No. 44 in the UK — was uncharted territory for Ludacris at the time.
